IMPACT

Covid-19 Crisis Response 

  • We helped more that 1700 severe cases of homelessness, work exploitation and other crisis situations of Romanian nationals in the UK
  • We formed a network of 37 area leaders in London, surroundings, North England and  Wales
  • Our volunteers were first responders when the flights were cancelled and the Romanian national were stuck and confused in the airports
  • When the Covid test, fit to fly, became mandatory, Roconect teams were present on site, guiding travellers to Covid sites and offering the necessary informations, 
  • We’ve collaborated with Luton Airport to translate the new flights rules in Romanian and Rroma language.
  • Our approach in delivering the solution was more of an organic human friendship and care
  • Depending on individual needs we helped them with: emergency accommodations, food, IDs, travel documents, local transport, etc
  • We have set up a team for moral support of psychologists, priests, counsellors, licensed therapists and life coaches, for the crisis victims and for those who lost somebody
  • Each Roconect area leader worked in efficient cooperation with consular officers and embassy staff
  • We’ve gathered the Romanian restaurants, Romanian international transport agencies, business leaders, Romanian political branches in the UK diaspora and the Romanian churches together, finding solutions in strong collaboration with the local authorities, both Romanian and British 
  • All operations were entirely supported by community donations
  • Some of our service users have become Roconect volunteers and we are still in touch up to this day 

Dover Lorry Queues – Christmas 2020

  • Offering thousands of food aid packages for 5 days in a row
  • We organised an operational system to get the lorry drivers  tested for Covid, to speed up the process of moving forward 
  • Hundreds of volunteers were involved, using their personal cars transporting the lory drivers
  • Volunteers guided and assisted the Covid testing process and kept in touch with the lory drivers on a one to one basis 
  • Roconect teams were present on site, daily offering informations and guidance in strong collaboration with the Romanian Consulate
  • Roconect volunteers became like  a family for that Christmas offering toys and a sprinkle of good cheer to the children in the travel coaches stuck in traffic 
  • Families with babies and those travelling for funerals were sponsored by Roconect donors to change travel by airplane
  • Some of the lorry drivers have become Roconect volunteers and we are still in touch up to this day 

Ukraine War Crisis Response 

Our war crisis response strategy focused on three major fronts:

   A. Aid for the refugees crossing the border to Romania

  • We have opened 14 aid collection points in London and Wales 
  • We mobilised the Romanian community and the local community in UK
  • We have sent weekly tones of aids from the UK and from our collaborators from the other parts of the world 
  • Many of our volunteers open their houses in Romania as emergency accommodation for the refugees 
  • We have assisted Jas Athwal, leader of Redbridge Council in his journey to deliver tones of aid  

   B. Aid to different regions in Ukraine 

  • We delivered aid in Chernivtsi and surroundings, Kamianets-Podilsky and in Kiev at the Heart Institute
  • It was a generosity effort from hundreds of organisations, community groups, religious entities, councils, and influencers from the UK, USA, Romania and other part of the world.

   C.  National campaign of awareness about the risk of modern slavery, at every Romanian border

  • In collaboration with the Minister of Internal Affairs (National Agency Against Human Trafficking) the campaign reached all over Romania and also some part on the Republic of Moldova and every border and major travel points in Romania (border customs, airports, stations, refugee centres, monasteries  etc)
  • We’ve created a network of donors and operational volunteers in Romania, to support logistically the National Agency Against Human Trafficking
  • Our campaign was translated in Ukrainian, English, Russian.

       

 

Brexit and EUSS Solutions 

  • Roconect join the community champions campaigns organised by Harrow Council and Mayor of London to inform the Romanian community about the EUSS applications 
  • Our area leaders joined the volunteer team of the Romanian Embassy helping speed up the process for delivering hundreds of thousands of passports, to enable the Romanian nationals to apply for the residence status, before the Brexit deadlines
  • Previous to all these, in 2019 our CEO was part of a video campaign about Brexit in collaboration with the Romanian Embassy and the Romanian Consul, made by Opal Transfer 

Romanian Churches collaboration

  • In 2018 under our CEO initiative in collaboration with Rev. Daniel Martin, the Romanian Evangelical Church leaders gathered together to met the Romanian Ambasador in the UK and the Romanian Consul to network.
  • In 2020 during the lockdown we had a strong collaboration whit many of the churches ever since
  • 2022 Church for Freedom at The City Hall London

       * Our Guest speakers were: General Consul of Romania in London  and Romanian National Agency Against Human Trafficking 

       * We have invited pastors and priest of all Romanian religious denominations, to find collaborative solutions to tackle vulnerability and Romanian modern slavery in the UK.

       * On Unification Day of Romania we have gathered the Romanian church leaders to pray in the House of Commons by the kind permission of The Rt Hon. MP Gareth Thomas 

      

Romanian Parliamentary  Elections 2020

  • Legislative elections were held on the 6th of December 2020 to elect the 136 members of the Senate and the 330 constituent members of the Chamber of Deputies 
  • We offered our support to the Romanian authorities as they were short on staff and because of the Covid Pandemic exceptional circumstances
  • 16 area Roconect leaders were involved in finding venues for polling stations around London, leading poling stations and finding local teams staff, so that Romanians living in London were able to express their civil rights.
